Find the right headphones for your commute and downtime
A noisy train, a long playlist, or a movie after work. Bose QuietComfort, Beats Solo 4, and AirPods Max 2 suit different listening habits. Here’s how we’d choose.
You put on headphones to enjoy something. Then the train drowns out the quiet parts, the ear pads start bothering you, or the battery gives up halfway through the day. The right pair depends on which of those annoyances you want to fix.
Start with three questions: Where will you listen? Do you prefer cushions on your ears or around them? Which phone and computer will you connect?
This guide compares the standard Bose QuietComfort Headphones introduced in 2023, Beats Solo 4, and AirPods Max 2 introduced in 2026. QuietComfort Ultra and QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) are different models.

Battery figures are manufacturer ratings under different test conditions, not results from a shared test. Volume, settings, and use affect runtime. Feature sources are listed below.
Bose QuietComfort: start here for a noisy commute
We’d start with QuietComfort if you want over-ear headphones for a train ride, flight, or shared workspace. Quiet mode provides active noise cancellation; Aware mode lets outside sound through when you need to hear what’s happening around you.
They can stay connected to two Bluetooth devices, with audio playing from one at a time. That makes a phone-and-laptop setup practical without committing to one device brand. Pause the first source before starting the second.
The included audio cable also gives you a wired option. The USB-C connection supports charging only. [1]

Beats Solo 4: choose them when battery life matters more than ANC
Solo 4 makes sense for listening at home, carrying a smaller pair in your bag, or getting through several listening sessions between charges. The cushions sit on your ears rather than surrounding them. Try that fit before buying if pressure on your ears tends to bother you.
The big tradeoff is noise control: there is no active noise cancellation or Transparency mode. The pads provide passive isolation, but we wouldn’t make these our first choice when cutting train or aircraft noise is the main goal. [2]
USB-C and 3.5 mm connections give you wired listening options, and the 3.5 mm connection works without battery power. They support iOS and Android, though individual features depend on your device. [3]

AirPods Max 2: consider them if you use Apple devices every day
AirPods Max 2 combines active noise cancellation with Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Spatial Audio. We’d shortlist them if those Apple features are part of the appeal, especially for listening and watching on compatible Apple devices.
Apple lists a weight of 386.2 grams and up to 20 hours of listening with ANC. Try the fit for a longer session if you can.
Lossless listening requires a wired USB-C connection and compatible content. Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness require current headphone firmware and compatible devices running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, or macOS 26.4 or later. They also work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, with limited functionality. [4]

Before you decide, try the fit
Wear them with the glasses you normally use. Check pressure around your ears, room inside the cushions, and how the headband feels. Move your head and use the controls. Give yourself enough time to notice pressure or discomfort.
For a noisy commute and a mix of devices, we’d start with Bose. For quieter surroundings and fewer charging stops, look at Solo 4. For Apple’s listening features in an over-ear design, consider AirPods Max 2. Then check the exact model, color, and included accessories on the listing before ordering.
Based on manufacturer documentation and our editorial assessment, not a hands-on comparison. Specifications checked November 7, 2026. We have not ranked sound quality, microphone performance, or noise-cancellation strength from listening tests.
